What is an accidental death rider?
An accidental death rider is an optional add-on to a term life insurance policy. It helps provide additional financial protection by paying an extra benefit to your beneficiaries if the insured dies as the result of a qualifying accident.
The accidental death rider is not a standalone policy. It is added to a term life insurance policy and is meant to supplement your existing coverage.
When can an accidental death rider be added?
An accidental death rider may be added when you purchase your term life insurance policy or within the first 30 days after purchase. After the first 30 days, the rider cannot be added. The accidental death rider may not be available in all states.
Who is eligible for the accidental death rider?
The accidental death rider may be available to customers who are approved for a Fabric by Gerber Life term life insurance policy. No medical exam is required, and there are no additional health questions for the rider. Availability may vary by state.
What does the accidental death rider cover?
The accidental death rider provides an additional benefit if the insured dies as the result of a qualifying accident. Qualifying accidents may include events such as a motor vehicle accident, drowning, or a plane crash as a passenger. Some exclusions apply. Examples of exclusions may include:
Natural causes or illnesses not resulting from an accident
Suicide
Intoxication
Drug use, unless prescribed by a physician
War or an act of war
Participation in a riot, insurrection, or terrorist activity
Participation in an illegal occupation, activity, or felony, or while incarcerated
Participation in certain dangerous activities, such as racing, bungee jumping, rock or mountain climbing, or aeronautics
Please see your policy documents for the full terms, conditions, and exclusions.
What is the difference between term life insurance and an accidental death rider?
Term life insurance pays a benefit to your beneficiaries if the insured person passes away while the policy is active, subject to the terms of the policy.
An accidental death rider pays an additional benefit if the insured person dies because of a qualifying accident.
Your term life insurance policy already includes coverage for accidental death, subject to the terms of the policy. The accidental death rider provides extra coverage for qualifying accidental deaths.
Do I need both term life insurance and an accidental death rider?
The accidental death rider is optional. Some customers choose to add it because they want additional coverage in case of a qualifying accidental death. It may be helpful if you want extra protection for your family or if you feel accidental death coverage is especially important for your situation.
Can I add the accidental death rider later?
You can only add the accidental death rider at purchase or within the first 30 days after purchasing your term life insurance policy, if the rider is available in your state.
After 30 days, the rider cannot be added.
Can I change the coverage amount for my accidental death rider?
Yes, some changes can be made after purchase. You can add the accidental death rider within the first 30 days after purchasing your term life insurance policy, if the rider is available in your state.
You can reduce the accidental death rider coverage amount at any time. The rider coverage amount cannot be higher than the active term life insurance coverage amount.
You can also remove the accidental death rider at any time. If you remove the rider after the first 30 days, you will not be able to add it back later.
Can I remove the accidental death rider?
If you would like to remove the accidental death rider from your policy, please contact us at support@meetfabric.com.
Removing the rider may reduce your total premium, but the rider cannot be added again later if you are outside the first 30 days after purchasing your policy.
Will my premium increase?
No. Once your policy and rider are active, your monthly rate is guaranteed to stay the same as long as premiums are paid.
Is the accidental death rider the same as AD&D coverage?
No. The accidental death rider is not the same as a separate accidental death and dismemberment, or AD&D, policy.
The accidental death rider is added to a Fabric by Gerber Life term life insurance policy and provides an additional benefit for qualifying accidental death.
AD&D coverage may be offered separately in certain situations and may have different benefits, terms, issuers, and eligibility requirements. Please refer to your policy documents to confirm which type of coverage you have.
